In 2015, local wars, starvation and misery in some Middle Eastern, Asian and African countries forced millions of people to leave their homelands. Many of these people migrated toward Europe, reaching Hungary as well. The refugee crisis created significant challenges for all national healthcare systems across Europe.

Despite available knowledge on appropriate psychosocial support for people confronted with death, loss, and severe stress in the context of major crises and disasters, it is crucial to understand what people affected expect from government officials and public leaders in the aftermath of an extreme event. Eight interviews with affected adult residents were conducted to explore their expectations and experiences in relation to government. This was done against the background of Park's (2016) model on meaning making.

Background

Heatwaves form a serious public health threat, especially for vulnerable groups. Interventions such as active outreach programs, exposure reduction measures and monitoring and mapping of at-risk groups are increasingly implemented across the world but little is known about their effect.

Objectives

De aandacht voor de psychosociale impact van de gaswinningsschade is recent sterk toegenomen. Er worden middelen vrijgemaakt voor extra ondersteuning en er wordt gezocht naar een goede aanpak daarvoor. Echter, om te komen tot een passende aanpak is eerst goede beeld- en oordeelsvorming noodzakelijk. Vanuit inzicht in de verwachte en feitelijke behoeften, gezondheidsproblemen, risicofactoren en beschermende factoren (hierna gezondheidsbeïnvloedende factoren) van individuen en gemeenschappen, kunnen bestuurders en organisaties gericht besluiten nemen over wat nodig is.

Disasters can have an enormous impact on the health and well-being of those affected. Internationally, governments and service providers are often challenged to address complex psychosocial problems. Ideally, the potentially broad range of support activities include a coherent, high-quality mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) programme. We present a theory-driven quantitative analysis of the quality of 40 MHPSS programmes, mostly implemented in European disaster settings.
