Steps towards empowerment for community healing

After surviving a recent massacre in the north ofthe Democratic Republic of Congo, a group of 22 staff members of a community health nursing programme requested the assistance of the author. During a three-day meeting the traumatic experiences ofthe participants were discussed. Several steps, including performing a ritual (‘burying the dead’) and psycho-education on stress and trauma, were developed using the resources ofthe group. In view ofthe high numbers of traumatised communities, participants felt the need to pass on what they had learned.

An extra language in counselling and training

During our work as counsellors for refugees and trainers ofcounsellors in areas of armed conflict, we have met with many language and communication problems. Interpreters can help in dealing with these problems, but in addition to that we learned to use little plastic dolls as an extra medium in working with people from different cultural backgrounds. In this article we describe the use of these dolls.

Training psychosocial counselling in Nepal: content review of a specialised training programme

This paper describes the training of' psychosocial counsellors as conducted by the Centre for Victims of Torture, Nepal. Both the proceedings of the training and the content are described. For clarity purposes a division is made between that part of the training in which skills are taught that can be used with more frequently encountered problems and that part of the training that deals with problems requiring a more specialised approach, such as HIV AIDS.

Training Counsellors in Areas of Armed Conflict

This article is about the learning needs of starting counsellors in areas of armed conflict. The curricula for the training of counsellors usually are based on ideas regarding which knowledge, skills and attitudes are required for effective counselling. The curricula do not always take the personal needs and backgrounds of the participants into account. Counselling trainingin areas of armed conflict can only be effective if the trainer assesses these personal backgrounds and needs and adapts his training approach accordingly.

In het kader van “disaster-preparedness”, het voorbereid zijn op rampen, heeft Stichting Impact in samenwerking met het Centrum voor Gezondheidsonderzoek bij Rampen (CGOR) de voor u liggende inventarisatie voor psychosociale aspecten van gezondheidsonderzoek na rampen uitgevoerd. Voor deze inventarisatie zijn wetenschappers met ervaring op het gebied van psychosociale en algemene gezondheidsaspecten van gezondheidsonderzoek om advies gevraagd.

Rampen en calamiteiten zijn per definitie gebeurtenissen die acuut en onverwacht grote groepen mensen treffen. Afhankelijk van de aard, omvang en dynamiek na afloop, heeft een deel van de getroffenen voor korte of langere tijd te kampen met ernstige gezondheidsklachten. Voor de zorg aan de getroffenen, zowel voor het beleid als de praktische invulling ervan, is inzicht in omvang van de gezondheidsproblematiek van groot belang. Gezondheidsonderzoek na rampen en calamiteiten kan deze relevante informatie verschaffen.
