A Pilot Study of Group Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for Combat Veterans with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness-based interventions show promise for stress reduction in general medical conditions, and initial evidence suggests that they are accepted in trauma-exposed individuals. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) shows substantial efficacy for prevention of depression relapse, but it has been less studied in anxiety disorders. This study investigated the feasibility, acceptability, and clinical outcomes of an MBCT group intervention adapted for combat posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

'I Wouldn't Start From Here'—An Alternative Perspective on PTSD From the ICD-11: Comment on Friedman

This commentary briefly summarizes some of the criticism directed at the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.) including the issues of complexity and comorbidity, and offers a rationale for attempting a simpler approach to diagnosis that can be used in minimally resourced, non-English-speaking countries.

A factor analysis of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms using data pooled from two venlafaxine extended-release clinical trials

Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (Fourth Edition) (DSM-IV) three-factor posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnostic criteria was conducted to determine fit for this patient population. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) of alternate symptom structures was planned to identify symptoms that cluster in this population. The response of symptom factors to treatment with venlafaxine extended release (ER) was explored.

Police officers : a high-risk group for the development of mental health disturbances? A cohort study.

Abstract

Objectives Policing is generally considered a high-risk profession for the development of mental health problems, but this assumption lacks empirical evidence. Research question of the present study is to what extent mental health disturbances, such as (very) severe symptoms of anxiety, depression and hostility are more prevalent among police officers than among other occupational groups.

Design Multicomparative cross-sectional study using the data of several cross-sectional and longitudinal studies in the Netherlands.

Efficacy of group treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms : A meta-analysis

This study conducted a meta-analysis of published randomized clinical group trials for adult survivors of trauma to examine the efficacy of the group format. Effect sizes for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) severity outcome were examined. Sixteen studies were included, with a total of 1686 participants.

Helping Vulnerable Populations : A Comprehensive Review of the Treatment Outcome Literature on Substance Use Disorder and PTSD

We review treatment studies for comorbid substance use disorder (SUD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Results show positive outcomes on multiple domains. Most models had more effect on PTSD than SUD, suggesting SUD is harder to treat. Seeking Safety (SS) is the most studied model. It shows positive outcomes, and is the only treatment outperforming a control on both PTSD and SUD. Partial-dose SS had more mixed results than the full dose.

Blurring of emotional and non-emotional memories by taxing working memory during recall.

Poster presentation at annual meeting of Association for Psychological Science (APS), Washington DC, USA.
If memories are recalled while working memory is taxed, e.g., by making eye movements (EM), the recalled memories become blurred and remain blurred during later recall. This phenomenon may help to explain the effects of EMDR. Current study investigates the role of emotional arousal in these memory effects.
