Het leven van Rob Piera werd tijdens de bersiap gered door de Gurkha-soldaten uit het Britse leger. Om iets voor hen terug te doen, steunt hij 64 jaar later de Gurkha Welfare Trust, die zorg draagt voor gepensioneerde Gurkha-soldaten in Nepal. Piera: 'Nadat de aanval was afgeslagen, streken ze me over mijn bol. Dat ben ik nooit vergeten.'

Het is haast een schilderchtig landschap. gras en bomen wuiven in de wind. De spoorrails, het middelpunt van de plek, glimmen in het zonlicht. 'Dit was de hoofdingang', zegt Robert Cohen, wijzend naar het hek waar de rails onderdoor lopen. 'Hier kwamen de treinen binnen.' Vijfenzestig jaar na zijn transport naar Auschwitz-Birkenau staat hij opnieuw voor de poort. Zeventien was hij toen hij hier per trein arriveerde en werd geselecteerd voor dwangarbeid.

Violence against women is a global phenomenon. Studies repeatedly show that women around the world suffer various gender-based forms of physical and sexual abuse, coercion and threats of harm. Women's intimate partners are among the most common perpetrators of violence, but women and girls are also assaulted and intimidated by close and extended family members, acquaintances, neighbours, and other males in positions of power, such as soldiers or police.

The literature tends to use ‘asylum seeker’ and ‘refugee’ interchangeably, creating uncertainty about the mental health of asylum seekers. However, asylum seekers occupy a unique position in British society which differentiates them from people with refugee status and which may have implications for their mental health. For example, ‘asylum seekers’ are supported and accommodated in dispersal areas under the National Asylum Support Service and they are not entitled to work.

The right to have rights attaches to those who have lost a legal place of theirown and who, therefore, belong nowhere in this world. At the same time the rightto have rights displays the unavoidable asymmetry between the refugee and thereceiving polity. Therefore, the right to have rights reflects that the refugee isneither inside (hence the asymmetry) nor outside (he belongs nowhere).

Asta is het vrouwelijke hoofd van de familie, van wie het de grootste zorg is om haar acht kinderen een toekomst te geven in Nederland. Potentially traumatizing experiences by a primary caregiver during childhood (TPC) may lead to affect dysregulation, which is a hallmark of borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adulthood. Path analyses with bootstrap confidence intervals were used to explore the relationships of TPC and under- and overregulation of affect to BPD symptoms. Almost 63% of a sample of 472 patients diagnosed with either BPD alone, comorbid BPD + somatoform disorder, or other mental disorder, reported childhood TPC.

OBJECTIVE: Psychosocial stressors are important in the pathogenesis of most mental disorders. However, little is known about the way psychosocial stressors uniquely combine to create risk for different expressions of child and adolescent psychopathology. The purpose of this study was to determine whether core dimensions of stressful psychosocial situations are differentially associated with childhood generalized anxiety disorder and oppositional defiant disorder.

De Hongaarse arts Miklos Nyiszli (1901-1956) en zijn gezin worden in de tweede helft van mei 1944 gedeporteerd en op transport gesteld naar het concentratiekamp Birkenau. Dankzij zijn beroepskennis van de forensische geneeskunde wordt de familie niet onmiddellijk vergast, maar wordt hij tewerkgesteld in Auschwitz als assistent van de SS-arts Dr. Mengele. In zijn opdracht moet hij lichamen van tweelingen en dwergen ontleden, die het doelwit van nazi-experimenten zijn. Verder moet hij medische zorg verlenen aan SS-bewakers en aan de gevangenen, die de gaskamers en crematoria bedienen.
