Perceived Demands During Modern Military Operations

Using a cross-sectional design, this study explored operational demands during the International Security Assistance Force for Afghanistan (2009-2010) across distinct military units. A total of 1,413 Dutch soldiers, nested within four types of units (i.e., combat, combat support, service support, and command support units) filled out a 23-item self-survey in which they were asked to evaluate the extent to which they experienced operational characteristics as demanding. Partner accommodation in posttraumatic stress disorder: Initial testing of the Significant Others' Responses to Trauma Scale (SORTS)

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with myriad relationship problems and psychological distress in partners of individuals with PTSD. This study sought to develop a self-report measure of partner accommodation to PTSD (i.e., ways in which partners alter their behavior in response to patient PTSD symptoms), the Significant Others' Responses to Trauma Scale (SORTS), and to investigate its reliability and construct validity in 46 treatment-seeking couples. The SORTS demonstrated strong internal consistency and associations with individual and relationship distress.

Parsing terrorism

In recent times, many terrorist attacks have been carried out by young men who knew they would die in the attack. This disturbing form of violence became a global concern after 9/11. The U.S. government has spent millions of dollars since then on the study of terrorism, and a new cadre of investigators is striving for quantitative rigor and testable theories. The study of suicide terrorism in particular has been a growth area. The work has challenged some long-accepted notions-for example, that terrorists are pathological, driven by religious fanaticism, or spurred by poverty.

Parenting as Relationship: A Framework for Assessment and Practice

Parenting tends to be framed as a set of actions directed toward the child rather than as a relationship. This article helps therapists, parent-educators, and researchers conceptualize parenting as a socioculturally embedded relationship. The authors apply the relational orientations typology (Silverstein, Bass, Tuttle, Knudson-Martin,& Huenergardt, 2006) to parent-child relationships.
