De datum staat nog in hun geheugen gegrift : 4 januari 1977. Die dag moesten Pierre Bokma en Lex Oostendorp opkomen om hun dienstplicht te vervullen. Hun paden voor en na deze tijd verschilden aanmerkelijk, maar ze hebben altijd contact gehouden. Terwijl buiten het zicht op het water wordt vertroebeld door mist, halen de acteur en oud-inspecteur-generaal der Krijgsmacht in het restaurant van het Rott erdamse Hotel New York in hoog tempo herinneringen op. Bokma vertelt dat hij werd opgeroepen op de dag dat hij werd aangenomen op de Toneelacademie Maastricht.

Tegen de duinen, aan de rand van de Haagse wijk Benoordenhout bevindt zich de Frederikkazerne. Een complex van traditionele kazernegebouwen en moderne kantoorfl ats waar burgers en militairen kriskras door elkaar lopen. In een van de hoge torens is het Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie (NIMH) gevestigd. In een kamer gevuld met boeken, vitrines vol militaire memorabilia en het staatsieportret van koning Willem Alexander en koningin Máxima ontvangt Piet Kamphuis, directeur van het NIMH, zijn bezoekers. Hij is, zoals altijd, gekleed in beschaafd burgertenue van jasje en dasje. 

Buiten de Schatkamer, de pronkzaal van het Nationaal Militair Museum vol oude uniformen, vaandels, schilderijen en documenten, staat een bordje: “Deze zaal is vandaag gesloten voor publiek.” Binnen gaat het over belangrijke zaken: Frederik heeft de vier hoogleraren en een voormalig hoogleraar militaire geschiedenis in Nederland uitgenodigd voor een gesprek over de stand van het vakgebied. Aan tafel zitten Herman Amersfoort, Petra Groen, Jan Hoffenaar,
Wim Klinkert en Ben Schoenmaker. Wordt dit gesprek een ware richtingenstrijd of zijn de vijf historici vredelievend en eensgezind? 

Abstract: Childhood sexual abuse of missionary children is a tragedy that mission organizations are seeking to prevent. A second tragedy concerns missionaries falsely accused of sexual abuse. Psychotherapy that generated false memories of sexual abuse was common in the 1980s and 1990s and still continues to some degree today in Christian circles. This chapter reviews scientific evidence that such false memories exist and provides guidelines that Christian organizations may use to help sort true memories of childhood sexual abuse from false memories of childhood sexual abuse. 

Zo nu en dan worden er in het psychotraumaveld nieuwe begrippen geïntroduceerd die de klinische praktijk verhelderen en verrijken. Een dergelijk begrip is moral injury, een term die begin jaren ’90 werd geïntroduceerd door Jonathan Shay en waaraan inmiddels hele theorieën, onderzoeken en behandelingen zijn gewijd. Tijd om er eens nader kennis mee te maken. Wat is nou precies moral injury en wat kunnen we ermee?

The formulation of life perspectives is one of the developmental tasks of adolescence. Expectations regarding one’s own future are shaped by cultural and contextual factors. However, there is little cross-cultural research that includes countries affected by war and turmoil. A Ugandan version of the Future Expectations Scale for Adolescents (FESA) was developed and evaluated with a sample of 279 Ugandan adolescents with low socioeconomic status living in rural communities affected by the Ugandan civil war (1986–2006).

Objective: Exposure to potentially traumatic events (PTEs) has been identified as a risk factor for various psychological problems in adolescents generally and in young refugees. The aim of this study was to examine whether individual resilience (assessed as a personality characteristic) can protect adolescents in diverse contexts from negative effects of trauma exposure.

Purpose: The Prospective Research in Stress-Related Military Operations (PRISMO) study was initiated to gain a better understanding of the long-term impact of military deployment on mental health, and to map the different biological and psychological factors that contribute to the development of stress-related mental health symptoms.

Efforts to better understand sexual victimization experiences among male populations have been chiefly absent (Spataro, Moss, & Wells, 2001; Stermac, Sheridan, Davidson, & Dunn, 1996). ). Research indicates that approximately 1 in 71 men in the United States (i.e., 1.6 million men) have been raped in their lifetime, and nearly 1 in 5 men (i.e., 25 million men) have experienced sexual victimization other than rape in their lifetime (Black, Basile, Breiding, Smith, Walters, Merrick, Chen, & Stevens, 2011).

Traumatic loss involves the loss of loved ones in the context of potentially traumatizing circumstances and is a commonly reported traumatic event. It may give rise to disturbed grief, called prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in ICD-11 and persistent complex bereavement disorder (PCBD) in DMS-5, combined with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. The recent inclusion of grief disorders in both DSM-5 and ICD-11 have spurred research on grief-related psychopathology. This special issue on traumatic loss includes 10 articles and two letters.
