Background

There is a suicide on the British railways every 36 hours. However, the reasons why people choose to die by train are not well understood.

Aims

To explore factors influencing and discouraging the decision to attempt suicide on the railway networks.

Method

We conducted an online survey and qualitative interviews with individuals who had contemplated or attempted suicide by train.

Results

Objective: To determine whether Internet-delivered cognitive behavioural therapy (i-CBT) is an effective treatment for those who meet diagnostic criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 
Method: A systematic review was undertaken according to Cochrane Collaboration Guidelines. The primary outcome measures were reduction in PTSD symptoms and drop-out. Categorical outcomes were meta-analysed as risk ratios (RRs) and continuous outcomes as mean differences (MDs) or standardised mean differences (SMDs).

EMDR is in korte tijd zeer populair geworden als behandelingsmethode voor posttraumatische stressstoornissen, maar een valide theoretische verklaring over het specifieke werkzame element is tot nu toe niet voorhanden. Voorstanders benadrukken de grote voordelen, vooral de effectiviteit en de gemakkelijke uitvoerbaarheid, evenals de geringe belasting voor de cliënten. Uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek blijkt dat EMDR even effectief kan zijn als bewezen werkzaam methoden, zoals cognitieve gedragstherapie.

De voorbije decennia heeft de opvatting postgevat dat de slachtoffers van massamoorden onze erkenning verdienen. Ze zijn niet meer weg te denken uit onze herdenkingscultuur. Dit dossier geeft een stand van zaken en werpt een blik op het ruime spectrum aan maatregelen die een blijvende erkenning moeten waarborgen. Er zijn de eenvoudige herdenkingsmomenten, maar ook en vooral de doelgerichte juridische acties binnen de strafrechtspraak op internationaal niveau, die de slachtoffers van gewelddaden voor het voetlicht brengen.

Numerous scholars attempted to investigate the phenomenon of transgenerational impact of war-related trauma on the offsprings,and came with both conflicting and matching evidence. First studies emerged around Holocaust transgenerational trauma, expanding to other war-related cases as twentieth century progressed.

The challenges of using EMDR for early trauma and neglect are that a) EMDR readily targets explicit memories, but early trauma is held in implicit memory in the right hemisphere (Siegel, Schore) and is not typically subject to direct recall, and b) Accessing the felt sense of early experience can be overwhelming if it includes the paucity of internal resources of a neglected baby. This workshop addresses both problems by careful preparation and systematic trauma reprocessing.
