Trauma, exile and mental health in young refugees

Objective: To review evidence of trauma and exile-related mental health in young refugees from the Middle East. Method: A review of four empirical studies: i) a qualitative study of 11 children from torture surviving families, ii) a cohort study of 311 315-year-old asylum-seeking children, iii) a qualitative study of 14 members of torture surviving families and iv) a follow-up study of 131 1123-year-old refugees. Results: The reactions of the children were not necessarily post-traumatic stress disorder specific.

Trauma, torture and dissociation : a psychoanalytic view

Understanding trauma is central in this book, from a relational psychoanalytical perspective, with the view that childhood trauma of patient is a dual narration along with the developmental processes as a factor creating resilient qualities. The theoretical material is presented in close conjunction with clinical data in the form of vignettes and case studies. Presentation of vignettes and case studies focuses on the multidimensional approach examining the contributions of psychoanalysis, emphasising the act of 'dissociation' (healthy and unhealthy).

Trauma and PTSD in Japan

This issue of the PTSD Research Quarterly is the third in an occasional series on the epidemiology of trauma and PTSD around the world, following previous issues on Latin America (Fall 2009) and the Middle East (Fall 2010). Whereas published reviews of epidemiologic studies focus primarily on North America, this series aims to highlight other relevant bodies of work. In this issue, I consider research conducted in a specific country, Japan, rather than in a region of the world.

Torture as a Cause for Somatization in Refugees with PTSD

Conclusions: There appears to be a high amount of somatic complaints in both tortured and non-tortured refugee patients with PTSD. This calls for new treatment strategies where there is more attention for somatic complaints. Further research should prove whether a specialised treatment with attention to function loss in somatic sense combined with psychological treatment has a greater effect on improvement in symptoms than psychological treatment only.

The skin immune system : the resourceful army of Langerhans cells

Contact dermatitis (CD) is a common health problem, which affects both men andwomen and accounts for 85-90% of all skin diseases. Two main types of contact dermatitiscan be distinguished, according to the pathophysiological mechanisms involved, i.e. allergicand irritant CD. Allergic CD (ACD) requires the activation of antigen specific (i.e. acquired)immunity leading to the development of effector T cells, which mediate skin inflammation[1,2].

The small world of Psychopathology

Background: Mental disorders are highly comorbid: people having one disorder are likely to have another as well. We explain empirical comorbidity patterns based on a network model of psychiatric symptoms, derived from an analysis of symptom overlap in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV).
