Birth experiences can be traumatic and may give rise to PTSD following childbirth (PTSD-FC). Peripartum neurobiological alterations in the oxytocinergic system are highly relevant for postpartum maternal behavioral and affective adaptions like bonding and lactation but are also implicated in the response to traumatic events. Animal models demonstrated that peripartum stress impairs beneficial maternal postpartum behavior. Early postpartum activation of the oxytocinergic system may, however, reverse these effects and thereby prevent adverse long-term consequences for both mother and infant.

Oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) DNA-methylation levels have been associated with traumaexposure, mood- and anxiety disorders, and social processes relevant to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We hypothesized that OXTR methylation may play a role in the neurobiological underpinnings of PTSD. In the current study, we compared OXTR methylation between PTSD patients (n = 31, 14 females) and trauma-exposed controls (n = 36, 19 females).

Psychological trauma has developed into a very common concept in the scientific community, in mental health care, as well as in popular language and mass media. The purpose of this article is to show the relevance of the discipline of traumatic stress studies to the field of public mental health by examining central concepts and findings concerning trauma and its aftermath and examining implications for public mental health.

During psychotherapy a man describes a dream, “I am hiding in the cellar from soldiers who are searching for me. Overwhelmed by anxiety, I know that if they find me they will kill me on the spot . . . Then I am standing in line for selection; the smell of burning flesh is in the air and I can hear shots fired. Faceless and undernourished people with striped uniforms march away to the crematoriums. Then I am in a pit full of dead, skeletal bodies. I struggle desperately to bury the cadavers in the mud . . . I feel guilty for what has happened, though I do not know why.

Exposure to war and violence has major consequences for society at large, detrimental impact on people’s individual lives, and may also have intergenerational consequences. To gain more insight into these intergenerational consequences, research addressing the impact of the Holocaust on offspring is an important source of information. The aim of the current study was to systematically review the mechanisms of intergenerational consequences by summarizing characteristics in Holocaust survivors and their offspring suggested to impact the offspring’s mental health.

Background: Different user groups regard systematic reviews as reliable and valuable sources for answering research questions. For systematic reviews to fulfill their purpose, methodological quality in all stages are of importance. The studies identified in a systematic search form the basis of the review, thus the search process methodology is important for both performing and reporting the search. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the quality of non-Cochrane systematic reviews by analyzing how they perform and report the search.

De datum staat nog in hun geheugen gegrift : 4 januari 1977. Die dag moesten Pierre B. en Lex O. opkomen om hun dienstplicht te vervullen. Hun paden voor en na deze tijd verschilden aanmerkelijk, maar ze hebben altijd contact gehouden. Terwijl buiten het zicht op het water wordt vertroebeld door mist, halen de acteur en oud-inspecteur-generaal der Krijgsmacht in het restaurant van het Rotterdamse Hotel New York in hoog tempo herinneringen op. B. vertelt dat hij werd opgeroepen op de dag dat hij werd aangenomen op de Toneelacademie Maastricht.

Tegen de duinen, aan de rand van de Haagse wijk Benoordenhout bevindt zich de Frederikkazerne. Een complex van traditionele kazernegebouwen en moderne kantoorfl ats waar burgers en militairen kriskras door elkaar lopen. In een van de hoge torens is het Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie (NIMH) gevestigd. In een kamer gevuld met boeken, vitrines vol militaire memorabilia en het staatsieportret van koning Willem Alexander en koningin Máxima ontvangt Piet Kamphuis, directeur van het NIMH, zijn bezoekers. Hij is, zoals altijd, gekleed in beschaafd burgertenue van jasje en dasje. 

Buiten de Schatkamer, de pronkzaal van het Nationaal Militair Museum vol oude uniformen, vaandels, schilderijen en documenten, staat een bordje: “Deze zaal is vandaag gesloten voor publiek.” Binnen gaat het over belangrijke zaken: Frederik heeft de vier hoogleraren en een voormalig hoogleraar militaire geschiedenis in Nederland uitgenodigd voor een gesprek over de stand van het vakgebied. 

Abstract: Childhood sexual abuse of missionary children is a tragedy that mission organizations are seeking to prevent. A second tragedy concerns missionaries falsely accused of sexual abuse. Psychotherapy that generated false memories of sexual abuse was common in the 1980s and 1990s and still continues to some degree today in Christian circles. This chapter reviews scientific evidence that such false memories exist and provides guidelines that Christian organizations may use to help sort true memories of childhood sexual abuse from false memories of childhood sexual abuse.
