Traumatic Grief : The Intersection of Trauma and Grief

This chapter focuses on the mental vulnerability of traumatic grief and recovery with this vulnerability, which implies a reduction in the number or intensity of symptoms or distress. Grief is characterized by an ambiguous presence-in-absence of the deceased, involving existential concerns such as isolation and meaninglessness.

Effectiveness and feasibility of structured emotionally focused family therapy for parents and adolescents : Protocol of a within-subjects pilot study

Mental health issues are widespread among children and adolescents worldwide. Although mental health difficulties may manifest themselves in many different diagnoses, there is growing support for a limited number of underlying transdiagnostic processes. Attachment encompasses a key transdiagnostic mechanism, namely emotional regulation.

A comparison of the CAPS-5 and PCL-5 to assess PTSD in military and veteran treatment-seeking samples

Background: This study was an examination of the puzzling finding that people assessed for symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) consistently score higher on the self-report PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) than the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5). Both scales purportedly assess PTSD severity with the same number of items, scaling, and scoring range, but differences in scores between measures make outcomes difficult to decipher.

Empirically-derived dimensions of childhood adversity and cumulative risk : associations with measures of depression, anxiety, and psychosis-spectrum psychopathology

Background: Investigating different approaches to operationalizing childhood adversity and how they relate to transdiagnostic psychopathology is relevant to advance research on mechanistic processes and to inform intervention efforts. To our knowledge, previous studies have not used questionnaire and interview measures of childhood adversity to examine factor-analytic and cumulative-risk approaches in a complementary manner.

Cumulative stressful events and mental health in young adults after 10 years of Wenchuan earthquake : the role of social support

Background: After a natural disaster, stressful events often continue to accumulate, affecting individuals in a different manner than the original disaster never occurred. However, few studies have examined these associations, the cumulative impacts of stressful events on mental health outcomes, and the role of social support. This study examined the prospective association between cumulative stressful events and mental health problems and the role of social support in young adults.

No association between war-related trauma or PTSD symptom severity and epigenome-wide DNA methylation in Burundian refugees

Background: War-related trauma is associated with varying posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence rates in refugees. In PTSD development, differential DNA methylation (DNAm) levels associated with trauma exposure might be involved in risk versus resilience processes. Studies investigating DNAm profiles related to trauma exposure and PTSD among refugees remain sparse.

The effectiveness of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder : a randomized controlled trial

The primary goal of this study is to determine eye movement desensitization and reprocessing in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. This research study relies on primary data analysis to identify the study's usage of various variables-related inquiries. The major independent variable is eye movement desensitization, and the main dependent variable is reprocessing in treating post-traumatic stress disorder. SPSS was used to gather this data, create descriptive and correlational findings, and explain the regression analysis between them.

Sleep impairments in refugees diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder : a polysomnographic and self-report study

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the clinical manifestation of traumatic events and is associated with sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbances, if left untreated, may perpetuate or even worsen symptoms of PTSD. Previous studies of other PTSD populations show a higher incidence of sleep impairments and sleep disorders compared to healthy controls (HCs); however, this has never been investigated in trauma-affected refugees diagnosed with PTSD.

The associations between metabolic profiles and sexual and physical abuse in depressed adolescent psychiatric outpatients : an exploratory pilot study

Background: Sexual and physical abuse have been associated with long-term systemic alterations such as low-grade inflammation and changes in brain morphology that may be reflected in the metabolome. However, data on the metabolic consequences of sexual and physical abuse remain scarce.

Objective: This pilot study sought to investigate changes in the metabolite profile related to sexual and physical abuse in depressed adolescent psychiatric outpatients.

Exploring the associations between social support and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder among Malaysian and Australian trauma survivors

Background: Social support is an important feature in understanding posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its treatment. Non-clinical research has identified distinct profiles of culturally appropriate social support. Despite this, little research has examined cultural influences on social support in the context of PTSD.

Objective: This study examined cultural differences in the associations between social support and symptoms of PTSD.
