Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Ukrainian Refugees in Poland : Implementation and Outcomes of the MHPSS Course for MHPSS Practitioners by IOM and APS

Since the Russia–Ukraine war in February 2022, Europe has faced a significant humanitarian challenge, with approximately 6.3 million Ukrainian refugees seeking sanctuary abroad by the end of 2023. Poland has been a major host nation, registering about 1.4 million refugees under the Temporary Protection scheme by mid-2022. Despite efforts to integrate these refugees, challenges such as language barriers, legal complexities and housing persist. The Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) activities are needed; however, the gap exists in their offer.

Evolving Through Challenges-Reflections from Intervention’s Editorial Board on the Financial Situation in the Humanitarian Sector

We introduce this 2025 Intervention collection of field reports, articles and personal reflections during a time of significant change, both within the journal and in the broader field of mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) in settings affected by conflict, displacement and other emergencies. The past year has brought about humanitarian crises that have been extremely distressing and have often had a profound impact on us, not only as professionals but also as individuals.

Integrating mental health care to reduce intimate partner violence in complex humanitarian emergencies

The public health burden of intimate partner violence (IPV) is immense, particularly in complex humanitarian emergencies, where up to three in four women report experiencing lifetime IPV. Informed by feminist theory, current interventions addressing IPV in these settings often use gender-transformative approaches to advance more equitable gender attitudes, community mobilisation efforts to engage men in changing gender norms, and economic-focused programming to advance equitable financial decision making within couples.

Academic voices on the health and humanitarian crises in Gaza

Academic publications on human rights violations in Gaza surged after Israel’s large-scale destruction following Hamas’s 7 October 2023 attack. We analysed the uncoordinated cooperative efforts documented in these works by reviewing publications addressing the health and humanitarian crises in Gaza between October 2023 and April 2024. We present a unified academic voice advocating for recognizing and restoring human rights for the people of Gaza. In the publications, we identified three key themes: ‘expression’, ‘emotionality’ and ‘expectations’.

Timely Mental Health Interventions in the Context of War and Humanitarian Crises as a Factor in Preventing the Long-term Consequences of Individual Trauma and Its Intergenerational Transmission

Objectives

There is a need to screen individuals requiring assistance, identify their specific needs, and determine predictors of the impact of war on their mental health. This will allow us to assess the burden of trauma and the mental health resources of people, with a focus on perceptions of support and recovery from the crisis.

“My home is (now) at peace” : Evaluating the relevance, acceptability and potential scalability of a guided self-help intervention for male refugees in Uganda

In humanitarian crises, male refugees face significant mental health challenges, including high rates of depression and alcohol misuse. However, access to adequate mental health services is limited. In this study, we evaluate a combined intervention that addresses both mental health and alcohol misuse among male refugees in Uganda, focusing on its relevance, acceptability, and potential for scalability.

Response to Challenges Regarding the Provision of Early Intervention Services During the Conflict in Ukraine

The article highlights the impact of conflict on children, noting that ongoing negative experiences, or “toxic stress,” can severely affect their development.

Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services, including services related to sexual and reproductive health problems, are highly unaddressed in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. We present findings of a qualitative study that reveals three gaps related to the knowledge and skills of staff in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to provide proper MHPSS, with integrated care for sexual and reproductive health.
