Complementary and integrative interventions for PTSD

To treat the impact of trauma, most current evidence supports the use of trauma-focused psychotherapy as the first line approach. However, millions of individuals exposed to trauma worldwide seek Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) therapies in hopes of achieving
wellness above and beyond reducing symptoms. But what is the evidence for CIH interventions? What are potential pitfalls? Given the growing popularity of and strong interest in CIH, EJPT is featuring research on these approaches in this special issue.

Effect of Life Review Therapy for Holocaust Survivors : A randomized controlled trial

Despite the therapeutic needs of aging Holocaust survivors, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) of psychotherapy exists for this population, with very few on older adults in general. This RCT aimed to compare the efficacy of Life Review Therapy for Holocaust survivors (LRT-HS) relative to a supportive control group. Holocaust survivors with a probable diagnosis of full or subsyndromal posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or depressive disorder were included. Exclusion criteria were probable dementia, acute psychotic disorder, and acute suicidality.

A systematic review with meta-analysis of cognitive bias modification interventions for anger and aggression

Aggression and anger are associated with interpretation and attention biases. Such biases have become treatment targets for anger and aggressive behavior in cognitive bias modification (CBM) interventions. Several studies have evaluated the efficacy of CBM for the treatment of anger and aggressive behavior, with inconsistent results.

Exploring the importance of predisposing, enabling, and need factors for promoting Veteran engagement in mental health therapy for post‑traumatic stress : a multiple methods study

Purpose

This study explored Veteran and family member perspectives on factors that drive post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) therapy engagement within constructs of the Andersen model of behavioral health service utilization. Despite efforts by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to increase mental health care access, the proportion of Veterans with PTSD who engage in PTSD therapy remains low. Support for therapy from family members and friends could improve Veteran therapy use.

Clinicians’ Views on Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy : A Mixed Method Systematic Review

This mixed methods systematic review aimed to provide insight into the clinicians’ views and experiences of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Seven electronic databases (PsychINFO, Public MEDLINE [PubMed], Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature [CINAHL], Scopus, Web of Science and Excerpta Medica Database [EMBASE], and Applied Social Sciences Index) and grey literature (ProQuest and Google Scholar) were searched systematically from inception to October 2021. Quality was assessed using the

Randomized controlled trial evaluating feedback to community-based therapists based on patient reports of trust and respect.

Objective: Patient trust/respect toward their therapists may be an important component of patient–therapist relationships. This randomized controlled trial evaluated the impact of providing weekly feedback to therapists regarding patient ratings of trust/respect toward their therapist.

Amygdala downregulation training using fMRI neurofeedback in post-traumatic stress disorder : a randomized, double-blind trial

Hyperactivation of amygdala is a neural marker for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and improvement in control over amygdala activity has been associated with treatment success in PTSD. In this randomized, double-blind clinical trial we evaluated the efficacy of a real-time fMRI neurofeedback intervention designed to train control over amygdala activity following trauma recall.

Pharmacological memory modulation to augment trauma-focused psychotherapy for PTSD : a systematic review of randomised controlled trials

Trauma-focused psychotherapy (tf-PT) is the first-line treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Tf-PT focuses on processing and modulating trauma memories. Not all patients benefit, however, and there is room for improvement of efficacy. Pharmacologically augmenting trauma memory modulation in the context of tf-PT may help optimise treatment outcome. To systematically review effects of pharmacologically augmented memory modulation in the context of tf-PT for PTSD (PROSPERO preregistration ID: CRD42021230623).

Triadic Therapy Based on Somatic Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder : A Pilot Randomized Controlled Study

The triadic therapy based on somatic eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for posttraumatic stress disorder (TSP) is a combination therapy for complex posttraumatic stress disorder (cPTSD), which comprises simplified EMDR, triplet of micro-dose medicines, and a pair of Chinese medicines. The EMDR procedure is a tactile bilateral stimulation on the body surface with minimum verbal intervention within 15 minutes every 2 weeks in a period of 2–3 months.

Emotion dysregulation mediates the association between acute sleep disturbance and later posttraumatic stress symptoms in trauma exposed adults

Background: Sleep disturbance is common within days to weeks following a traumatic event and has been associated with emotion dysregulation, a strong risk factor for PTSD development. This study aims to examine if emotion dysregulation mediates the relationship between early post-trauma sleep disturbance and subsequent PTSD symptom severity.
